Al-Ettifaq failed to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United before today’s transfer deadline in Saudi Arabia.

The Steven Gerrard-led club made a bold move for Sancho after the winger had a public spat with United manager Erik ten Hag last weekend.

Ten Hag said Sancho was left out of the squad for United’s trip to Arsenal for not training properly during the week, but Sancho immediately questioned his manager’s comments on social media, claiming to be “a scapegoat”.

Ettifaq moved to Sancho after already signing Jordan Henderson from Liverpool and Demarai Gray from Everton this summer.

It is clear that the Saudi Pro League club and United were in contact through intermediaries through Sancho, who expressed interest in moving to the Middle East.

But while United were willing to let the 23-year-old join Ettifaq for the rest of the season on free loan, the deal included a commitment to buy him for £50 million, which the Dammam-based club simply couldn’t afford. Sources told Mail Sport on Wednesday that the deal is “dead”.

It is an indication of Sancho’s fall from grace at Old Trafford that United were prepared to let him go after the Ten Hag feud.

Club sources indicated earlier this summer that United would be listening to offers of around £45 million for Sancho, although they were not actively looking to sell him.

Sancho cost £73 million from Borussia Dortmund two years ago after protracted negotiations, but failed to live up to expectations at United, amassing 12 goals and six assists in 82 appearances.
