Ex-Tesla employees reveal 27-foot-long EV camper with beds for up to six people

Former Tesla employees used the skills they learned under Elon Musk to design a mini house on wheels for the ultimate glamping experience – and it could compete with the Cybertruck trailer add-on.

Lightship’s L1 voyage can accommodate up to six people in the 8-foot cabin that also has every amenity – from a full kitchen to a full bathroom and a seating area that converts into beds.

The San Francisco-based company touts itself as America’s first all-electric recreational vehicle company, aiming to replace traditional trailers that rely on “smelly, noisy, gas or propane generators” that hinder the experience of traveling away from home.

Lightship uses a clean-sheet approach with three times more aerodynamic design than a traditional travel trailer, making it easy to tow by an electric vehicle with a range of 300 miles.

The Lightship L1 starts at $125,000 or $118,400 after available tax credit and is available now for a $500 pre-order. Production is expected in late 2024.

Tesla’s Cybertruck, which starts at nearly $40,000, offers a $24,000 “Space Camper” that turns the pickup into a mobile home.

The device is neatly slid into the cargo bed of the vehicle.

When activated, it extends outward and upward, creating enough space for two people to sleep on a built-in bed.

Although it is an enclosed campsite, the attachment can also be opened on one side, allowing drivers to sleep under the stars in ‘stargazing mode’ if they wish.

However, the Space Camper is more than half the size of the Lightship L1.

Lightship co-founder and president Toby Kraus said in a statement: “With 90 percent of the market being towed motorhomes, we set out to create an all-electric travel trailer like no other motorhome available today, and that’s just the beginning.

“We are leveraging our expertise in the development and design of automotive EVs to build a brand that creates wonderful outdoor travel experiences for everyone and brings even more people to the RVing pastime.”

Lightvessel L1 is 2.5 meters wide and 1.80 meters long, but in camper mode it reaches 3 meters high.

In camper mode, the roof of the trailer is raised so that people can move freely inside while standing.

Motorcycle trend saw a Lightship L1 in the wild at the Electrify Expo in Long Beach, California and reported that it has a minimalist, modern exterior with a sleek kitchen.

However, Motortrend said the “bathroom seemed like an afterthought” compared to the rest of the interior, while the company calls it a “relaxing spa bathroom.”

Images shot at the outlet show what appears to be 1990s accent painting, pink with flecks of even brighter pink and white paint.

Lightship said the countertops are made from ocean detritus, which is likely what gives it the retro vibe.

There’s a small sink near a toilet and a standing shower off to the side, but you might notice it’s a trailer after all.

The founders used their Tesla expertise to design Lightship L1 with a self-powered system featuring an electric powertrain with an onboard battery capacity of up to 80 kWh.

In March, German automaker and travel trailer manufacturer AirStream unveiled a concept that includes sleeping and cooking facilities, storage and walking space.

The 16-metre-long Airstream Studio FA concept has seating that converts from a dining space to a full-size bed, and a kitchenette in the back with a sink, stove and storage space.

Pricing for the silver bullet-looking trailer has not yet been announced.

An AirStream spokesperson told DailyMail.com: “The partnership was designed as an innovation exercise to help us think about how we can build on Airstream’s design DNA to create products for tomorrow.

“It is possible that some features and innovations of the concept may be incorporated into future models of current Airstream products.”

While costs are unknown, AirStream is a top name in the trailer industry, selling its designs from $46,000 to over $188,000.
