Ex-Socceroo Robbie Slater explains why Ange Postecoglou won’t leave Celtic for Premier League job

Ex-Socceroo Robbie Slater explains why Ange Postecoglou will NOT take the Premier League job he ‘deserves’ – and says a Celtic defeat in the cup final would be the biggest shock in football history

  • Ange Postecoglou is tipped to stay at Celtic
  • Speculation that he would move to the Premier League
  • Robbie Slater is confident that ‘Aussie Ange’ will stay put
  • Aimed at luring Champions League next season

Former Socceroo Robbie Slater does not believe Ange Postecoglou will leave Celtic and pursue a ‘deserved’ managerial role in the Premier League.

With the Hoops on the verge of a treble of domestic trophies in Scotland, Slater pointed to unfinished business that ‘Aussie Ange’ has in the UEFA Champions League.

It is because Postecoglou has been linked with roles at Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

“I think the interest is deserved. I think he’s built a great reputation… it’s not just his success, it’s the way it happens. It’s the style of football,” Slater said of it Fox football podcast.

‘It’s certainly rarely seen [in Scotland]this style of football that Ange has brought.

“And he’s done it with every club he’s been to, to be honest. He’s the king at Celtic.’

Rumors of interest from Spurs and the Blues aside, Brighton, Wolves, Everton, Leeds United and Leicester City are also said to be impressed by Postecoglou’s eye for talent.

Celtic finished bottom of their group in the Champions League this year, but with the experience they have gained against the likes of Real Madrid, better results can follow next season.

Slater also cannot see Celtic lose the Scottish Cup final to second-tier Inverness Caledonian Thistle on June 4.

A new league title seems like a formality at Celtic Park, where the Hoops have lost just once in 33 home games.

They are currently 13 points ahead of bitter rivals Rangers.

Postecoglou, 57, began his managerial career with South Melbourne in the National Soccer League before moving on to coach Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory in the A-League.

He then spent three years in Japan with Yokohama F. Marinos before being appointed boss of Celtic in 2021.

Postecoglou also coached the Socceroos from 2013-2017, culminating in winning the 2015 Asian Cup on home soil.
