Former NBA MVP and No. 1 draft pick Derrick Rose has retired from basketball at the age of 35.
Rose was selected first overall in the 2008 Draft by the Chicago Bulls and won the MVP award in 2011 during a seven-season tenure with the team.
He then moved to New York, where he shuttled back and forth during the latter stages of his career, partly due to a series of injuries.
On Thursday morning, he announced the news on social media and also published it in the local newspapers of all the cities where he played: Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Detroit and Memphis.
In an additional statement to The Athletic, he said: “The next chapter is about chasing my dreams and sharing my growth. I believe true success comes from becoming who you were created to be, and I want to show the world who I am beyond basketball.
‘Whether it’s good or bad, everyone has a “What if” story in their life. Even if I could, I wouldn’t change anything about mine because it’s what helped me find true joy.’
More to come.
