Ex-Matildas star names single person responsible for US World Cup fight after commentator dubbed superstar Megan Rapinoe as ‘the ultimate pimp’
- Cannuli blames Team USA’s mediocre form
- Team has made headlines for lack of patriotism
- American sports columnist hit the side
The U.S. women’s soccer team has been unusually lackluster in their bid to win a World Cup for a third straight — and former Matilda Catherine Cannuli has blamed one person.
The defending champions have caused more controversy than excitement throughout the tournament, with several of their players pictured standing silently during the national anthem.
US sports columnist Jason Whitlock has said he does not support the US in the World Cup and hopes they lose the next game against Sweden on Sunday.
“In the history of the sport, no team has required such merit as our women’s soccer team,” he wrote.
Rooting against this American Nightmare is not unpatriotic. Carrots for them.’
Then, in a separate post, Whitlock denounced controversial branding Megan Rapinoe, calling her “the Andrew Tate of LGBTQ feminism.”

A popular sports columnist called Megan Rapinoe ‘the ultimate pimp’
Whitlock said, “Rapinoe is the ultimate pimp. She is the Andrew Tate of LGBTQ feminism. She sees herself as a force for good, a force for freedom and true femininity.
She believes she is a threat to the establishment. She is popular, she is unimaginably rich, sexually liberated and adored by her followers.
‘She’s a fraud. She hates America because she hates herself. She’s poisonous. Her attitude permeates the national team. At the age of 38, she is only on the roster to further polish her brand.’
Former Premier League goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen believes Team USA’s drop in form is due to the side going through a transition period.
“A lot of new players are coming in and it’s a culture change and that takes time,” he said.
“If you’ve been used to success for so long, but you lose it a little bit, then you have to get new success and that’s what this team needs. They need a great game to kick-start this tournament, but we need to see more.’
However, former Matilda Catherine Cannuli thinks otherwise and thinks head coach Vlatko Andonovski should take the blame.
‘I don’t agree with you there. Vlatko (Andonovski) has had so much time with this time and he should be in a better position in this tournament now,” said Cannuli.

“The quality of the girls he’s got, even the younger ones coming through – yes, there’s a generational change on this team – but the quality he has at his disposal… those players are all playing in the US, he’s got them when he wants them, the NWSL shuts down to allow them to go to camps and play games.
“He should do better and they should talk about what he’s been doing in this run-up for the past four years because the movement of the ball for the US was non-existent last night. It was the worst I’ve seen them in a very, very long time.
“Normally they dominate from their physicality, they could catch teams off guard, but now teams are starting to beat them tactically and that’s going to be a big, big problem for them to move forward when they go against Sweden.”
The USA takes on Sweden, one of the strongest teams in the tournament, on Sunday at 7pm (AEST).
