Como defender Raphael Varane is reportedly considering retiring from football following his latest injury.

The world champion joined the newly promoted Italian club as a free agent after his contract with Manchester United expired this summer.

The 31-year-old made 95 appearances for United before announcing his departure in May this year.

Varane made his debut for Como in last month’s Coppa Italia match against Sampdoria, but was sent off injured after just 20 minutes.

It was later revealed that the centre-back had suffered a knee injury and was ultimately left out of Cesc Fabregas’ Serie A squad, as he is expected to be sidelined for an extended period.

The world champion is said to be due to announce his decision soon, having played at the top level for 14 years.

Varane came through the youth ranks of Ligue 1 Lens and, after one season in the first team, moved to Real Madrid in 2011 at the age of 18.

He played 360 games for the Spanish giants and won three La Liga titles, four Champions League titles and the Copa del Rey in ten years.

The Frenchman joined Manchester United in 2021 and showed his qualities despite the injuries he suffered during his three years at Old Trafford.

Varane also made 93 appearances for France and played a leading role in their 2018 World Cup victory. He retired from international football in 2022.

In his final game in a United shirt he lifted the FA Cup, starting the 2-1 victory over Man City at Wembley.
