A former state lawmaker facing charges over alleged child sex abuse has been caught reporting the incident to police after being released on bail.

Rory Amon, 35, was caught leaving a police station in Sydney’s northern suburb of Dee Why on Sunday morning wearing a blue jumper.

The former Pittwater Liberal member resigned from the party and parliament on August 30 after being arrested and charged with child abuse.

That same day he was granted strict conditional bail at Manly District Court.

In a statement, Mr Amon denied the allegations and said he would “plead his case in court, not the media”.

The former Opposition assistant spokesman for transport and roads, infrastructure and youth, was elected to the seat of Pittwater last year.

He has been charged with five counts of sexual intercourse with a person between the ages of 10 and 14, two counts of attempted sexual intercourse with a child, two counts of sexual assault on a child and committing an act of indecent assault.

Following his arrest, NSW Police said an investigation was launched in June 2022 following reports of alleged sexual abuse in July 2017.

The former Pittwater Liberal member resigned from the party and parliament on August 30 after being arrested and charged with child abuse.

After news of Mr Amon’s arrest emerged, Liberal Party leader Mark Speakman said he had called on the former MP to resign.

“While Mr Amon is entitled to the presumption of innocence, it will be some time before a criminal trial begins. In the meantime, the people of Pittwater deserve an MP who can fully discharge his duties in the community,” he said.

Mr Amon will appear in court again in October.
