In a truly inspiring story, Paul Alex reveals how he went from a police detective to a community-minded entrepreneur – with no regrets two years later.
The first company Paul Alex started as he embarked on his entrepreneurial journey, ATMTogether has performed exceptionally well, generating a whopping $14 million in revenue in just over two years.
The second company he founded, Merchant Automation, is also showing strong signs of growth. His new business idea allows merchants to stop paying credit card processing fees.
Paul Alex has seen the company generate $1 million in revenue in the five weeks since its inception. Paul Alex’s story is one of beating the odds.
When he was young, words like “entrepreneur” or even “businessman” were far beyond what he could experience. He grew up in a family of people who worked for minimum wage.

Even in his age group, among his friends, working from nine to five and partying on weekends was the way to go.
He was raised to work hard, but working for himself was never a goal he was taught. However, that hasn’t stopped him from wanting to get rich one day. At least someone who doesn’t always have to work.
He explains, “My mother was always working, and so was my stepfather. So I barely saw my parents. And I remember growing up, I felt that if I have kids, I’ll make sure I’m there to see them…
“And I don’t blame my parents at all. I love them to death. But in the end it’s just what they don’t know, what they don’t know.’
His lack of guidance regarding business and his life options could have been more clear to Paul Alex. It was so profound that even today he makes sure to help children in his community in one way or another.

So while MerchantAutomation took off, Paul supported It’s All About the Kids, a San Diego charity, with a $100,000 dollar donation over the holiday season.
What Paul Alex lacked in guidance and role models, he more than made up for in spirit. He was a kid who would sell his old toys to raise capital so he could buy new toys.
He sounds like a clear example of a kid who knows no one else will do it for him if he doesn’t get his. So he became, as he liked to say, a real go-getter.
He showed the same attitude when Paul Alex, in his early twenties, got a job in sales. He started working for a chemical cleaning company just when he turned 21, and enjoyed his first taste of a real job.
He said, “I remember being so happy because I got it on my own, and it was a real job, with full-time benefits. I was also shipped across the country so I got to experience the United States beyond the San Francisco Bay Area. I’ve never flown before, so I experienced that for the first time.’
After feeling jaded by his job and tired of dealing with customer issues, Paul Alex decided to do something different. He learned about applying to the police force and became adamant about becoming a police officer in one of Northern California’s cities, one of the toughest cities by crime and homicide rates.

So while he couldn’t enroll in the Academy the first time he tried, he got in the second time. That experience also changed his life, because it taught him the importance of having the right mindset and never giving up.
Paul would eventually continue his career as a police officer and become a detective. He was part of a special task force that arrested the biggest drug traffickers in his region.
Paul later worked in the Special Victims Unit, where he mainly dealt with human trafficking.
Finally, feeling the toll of taking over his job, he chose to work with young people in the Youth Services Department before leaving the force in 2021 and starting ATMTogether.
However, he did not just plunge into business.
ATM Work: Paul Alex spent a few years developing his ATM business as a side job while working in the police force
Paul Alex spent a few years developing his ATM business as a side job while on the police force.
He found out the ins and outs of it, and what he couldn’t figure out, he found a mentor to show him. And so today he’s big on passive income, making money and helping others do the same.
Paul Alex says, ‘When I started ATMTogether I always wanted to be the guy helping the newbie. I wanted to help someone who was in it for the money. But I built a community around it and the service, which eventually got off the ground.’
With a refined plan, Paul Alex is back, telling people their stores don’t have to lose that few extra percent charged as card usage fees.
It’s a claim some find controversial, but it didn’t bother Paul or those who follow him. The company’s success says it all, and Paul Alex is sure he is doing the right thing. And that’s all the fuel one needs to fuel a determined mindset.
