Oxford United hilariously announced Josh McEachran’s one-year contract extension.

The newly promoted Championship side benefited from the Chelsea youngster’s abilities as they secured a place in the second tier of English football for the first time in 25 years.

Instead of just posting an image of the midfielder holding up a shirt, the club’s social media department decided to reference a recent John Terry interview, in which the Blues legend told a story about McEachran.

Terry revealed that he led a mutiny against former manager Andre Villas-Boas after the Portuguese decided to put some of the club’s youngsters, including McEachran, in the first division, while he was placed in the economy class.

“This was part of the AVB saying ‘no player is bigger than me, everyone is the same”. Terry said on the Up Front with Simon Jordan. ‘It turns out that Lamps is flying first class and I’m flying back first. So if you fly first you get back in economy class, but actually it wasn’t good enough.

“So I’m getting on the plane. ‘No, we’re not going anywhere until these young players go back into the economy and the first-team players who built this club to where we are now go back first”.

The recent mention served as inspiration for Oxford, which released a video of a scene from the 2024 Amazon Studios film Upgraded. It shows the main character upgrading his plane ticket to first class after the attendant takes pity on their less-than-ideal placement in the economy.

A rough cut of McEachran’s head replaces that of Camila Mendes, who plays the main character in the film.

The rather elaborate announcement video was at least appreciated by the man at the center of it. McEachran took to social media to show his appreciation by commenting on the post with a smiling face and three clapping emojis.

Oxford also confirmed his stay in more conventional terms, as they released a club statement to coincide with their stunt.

“The 31-year-old played a crucial role as the club achieved promotion to the Championship for the first time in 25 years,” the statement said. ‘Featured in one of the semi-finals of the play-offs and in the victory over Bolton Wanderers in the final at Wembley.

“McEachran started his career in the Chelsea youth academy and has a wealth of experience in the English football leagues and in Europe, and he will look to continue to bring his qualities to the team in the Championship.”

McEachran spoke of his enjoyment of playing for his local club and emphasized his enthusiasm to compete in the Championship next season.
