Ex-BP boss Bernard Looney joins the board of Abu Dhabi’s £63bn energy investment group XRG

Former BP boss Bernard Looney has joined Abu Dhabi’s £63bn energy investment group XRG, his second new job in just two weeks.

Looney kept a low profile after quitting BP in September last year until he was appointed chairman of the American AI group Prometheus Hyperscale last month.

Yesterday, XRG, an offshoot of Abu Dhabi national oil group Adnoc, said it will benefit from Looney’s “tremendous experience in the global energy supply chain.”

“XRG will focus on finding ways to sustainably meet the increasing demand for energy,” Looney said.

Experience: Former BP boss Bernard Looney has taken up his second new job in just two weeks at Abu Dhabi’s £63bn energy investment group XRG

His mission at BP to transition from oil and gas to renewable energy is fading as the company looks to spin off its offshore wind farm business – harking back to ambitions to move away from fossil fuels.

Looney became CEO of BP in 2020, but resigned after admitting he misled the board about the extent of personal relationships with colleagues.

Since then, BP has recovered up to £32.4 million in wages, bonuses and shares from him.
