Ex-Aussie Test skipper Michael Clarke has admitted he is worried after Glenn Maxwell ended up in hospital in Adelaide last week after a night out watching a cult band.

The World Cup star was watching former cricketer Brett Lee’s band, Six and Out, at the Governor Hindmarsh hotel with other Australian and West Indian players when the incident occurred.

According to reports, the all-rounder was ‘dehydrated’ and passed out at the venue after ‘a few beers in the sun’.

On Tuesday, The Daily Telegraph reported that several sources with connections to the Australian team say that “Maxwell’s judgment of alcohol has been an issue in team environments for several years.”

The 35-year-old has been involved in several bizarre incidents in recent years that have led to injuries.

Maxwell missed Australia’s group match against England at the World Cup last year due to an injury that left him with a concussion, reportedly the result of a golf cart accident.

Sources say Maxwell had had a few beers when the accident happened, but was not drunk.

Maxwell also broke his leg in November 2022 when he slipped at a friend’s 50th birthday party.

The incident cost him a spot in the Australian Test squad to tour India. He was also forced to leave the entire BBL that season with the Melbourne Stars.

On Tuesday, Clarke admitted Maxwell’s recent incident in Adelaide is concerning.

‘To have to be put in an ambulance. That makes me nervous,” he said.

‘With things like this, with things off the field. I like ‘the benefit of the doubt and innocent until proven guilty’.

‘I know one thing: Cricket Australia will get to the bottom of it. Nowadays there are cameras and there are people. So the truth will be told.

“The other thing we have to do is make sure he’s okay. He didn’t end up spending the night there (in the hospital). I can’t think of a time when I had to call an ambulance or an ambulance was called for me, no matter how drunk I was.

“So I’m afraid there’s more to it and first of all I hope he’s okay.”

CA said on Monday that Maxwell has been ‘rested’ from the ODI series against West Indies starting February 2, but this is not related to his hospital admission.

Maxwell and teammate Jhye Richardson, who was uninjured, have been replaced by young players Jake Fraser-McGurk and Xavier Bartlett.
