Everything we’ve heard so far from Squid Game Season 2
you know about Squid game. Even if you haven’t seen it, you’ve heard of it – possibly from friends who couldn’t stop talking about it, but also just from living in the world. It was inescapable; According to data from the streamer, it quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched series in the world, with some 1.65 billion hours watched in its first 28 days. Zedd made a remix with the Squid game theme; red light green light got a bump, just like ppogi; and Netflix even did an ill-advised (and ultimately boring) reality show based on the original’s dystopian games.
All of which means: Naturally there would be one Squid game season 2. Here’s everything we know about it.
(Ed. remark: This post contains spoilers for the end of Squid game season 1.)
When does Squid Game season 2 debut on Netflix?
Netflix hasn’t shared much about the release date, but confirmed it in the Next on Netflix reel Squid game season 2 coming in 2024.
Netflix confirmed that it had greenlit (ayy) the show for season 2 in June 2022, a slight delay after its big release in fall 2021. Squid game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk had no plans for a second season and took some time off after the first.
Will Lee Jung-jae return for Squid Game season 2?
Yes! Hwang confirmed in a letter last year that Lee’s Gi-hun will be back for season 2, as season 1 was coming to an end. The Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) will also make a dastardly return to Season 2’s Squid Game, along with Wi Ha-joon and Gong Yoo. (Hwang expressed regret that he had killed off many beloved characters when he thought Squid game Season 1 would only be a one-off.)
Hwang also said this in the letter: βThe man in the suit with the ddakji might come back. You’ll also meet Young-hee’s friend, Cheol-su.β Other notable names appearing in season 2: Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Im Si-wan, Yang Dong-geun, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-wook, Won Ji-an, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-shim, Lee David and Roh Jae-won.
What is Squid Game season 2 about?
So far, both Hwang and Netflix have played most of the details close to the chest. Other than the new and old cast playing here, there isn’t much information on how Gi-hun will be brought back into the game (although the season 1 finale kind of dangles that). But from what we can gather from the footage Netflix released: Squid game In Season 2, Gi-hun makes good on his wish to take down the games altogether.
Will Squid Game season 2 have the same theme song?
The odds are pretty good, we suspect β Jung Jae-il (who also composed for Parasite) was a real success with that, and it’s pretty indelible, even after a number of years no Squid game. Expect to be haunted by that simple tune again!
