Everton’s appeal against the 10-point penalty imposed for breaching Premier League financial rules will be heard this week.
The club was sanctioned by an independent commission in November after it was found to have exceeded the allowable losses under the league’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) in the three seasons up to and including 2021-2022, but immediately indicated it would appeal to go.
It is understood the appeal hearing before an independent committee will last until the end of the week, with the outcome of the appeal expected to be known before the end of February.
The outcome of the appeal could also have a direct impact on a second PSR complaint faced by the club, which was filed on January 15. That complaint relates to an assessment period ending with the 2022-2023 season.
Under a new, accelerated process to address PSR breaches agreed by the top clubs last summer, an independent committee hearing on the second PSR complaint must be completed no later than 12 weeks after the complaint was filed, which would be early April.

Everton described the initial 10-point penalty as ‘completely disproportionate’.
The independent committee’s written statement of reasons stated that the club’s overspending was ‘the result of Everton irresponsibly taking the risk that things would turn out positively’.
The PSR breach was described as ‘serious’ and warranted ‘a significant penalty’.
Nottingham Forest were also referred to an independent committee for a PSR breach on January 15.
Everton next face a trip to Fulham in the Premier League on Tuesday evening, as they continue their tough relegation battle after initially picking up ten points – with some fantastic early results seeing them climb the table despite their dire situation.
However, poor form has crept in since then – with the Toffees now 17th and one point ahead of 18th-placed Luton Town.
