Everton vs Chelsea: Game halted after a supporter suffered a medical emergency in the stands

Everton’s clash against Chelsea game was suspended with just minutes remaining after police ran onto the pitch to alert club doctors of a fan in need of medical attention in the crowd.

Officials paused the game for three minutes while officials tended to the supporter. The match also saw Everton players Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina forced off injured.

Ten additional minutes were added on at the end of the game to account for the stoppages.

The news comes just months after Chelsea’s game with Leeds in March was brought to a halt after a fan suffered a medical emergency in the crowd. The fan received medical attention from officials in attendance and was later confirmed to be in a stable condition.

Likewise an incident in the Carabao Cup game between the Blues and Tottenham in January led to a supporter in attendance requiring medical attention. After being attended to in the stands, the fan was eventually able to walk away from the seats with the support of medics.

On December 1, the Watford versus Chelsea and Southampton versus Leicester games were both paused so that a fan could receive treatment in the stands.

Meanwhile back in October a fan was given emergency treatment during Newcastle’s game against Tottenham at St James’ Park, with the supporter being stabilised and taken to hospital. The game was restarted after a 20 minute delay.

Saturday’s game at Goodison park also saw Everton defender Ben Godfrey escorted from the pitch on a stretcher after suffering a serious injury.

The 24-year-old was challenging Chelsea’s Kai Havertz for the ball when he appeared to roll his ankle on his right leg. Referee Kevin Friend added an additional eight minutes on to the first half following the incident.

Godfrey has since been taken to a nearby hospital for an assessment on his injury.
