Everton have reportedly rejected Manchester United’s improved £50million offer for defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

United made a second offer of £45million plus £5million in bonuses for the 22-year-old after an initial bid was rejected.

United are willing to give the Englishman a long-term contract worth £160,000-a-week.

However, Sean Dyche’s side are understood to want to get closer to £70million for Branthwaite and United will be forced to make at least a third bid for him.

Mail Sport previously reported that United held a recruitment meeting on Monday to discuss a fresh bid for Branthwaite, as well as the transfers of Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt and Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee.

United are in advanced negotiations over Zirkzee, whose release fee in Italy is £34m, and hope to agree a transfer fee of around £43m with Bayern for De Ligt.

The club’s other priority position in the summer transfer window is a defensive midfielder, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte high on the list of possible candidates.

United will need to sell players to balance the books and meet profit and sustainability rules, and Mason Greenwood could be the first to leave.

Greenwood is believed to be on the verge of ending his controversial United career after Marseille made a £27million bid with a significant sell-on clause.

Greenwood held talks with United officials at Carrington on Monday but did not train with his team-mates on the first day of pre-season training.

The 22-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, has been told he has no future at Old Trafford despite charges of attempted rape and assault against him being dropped last year.

Marseille have overtaken Lazio, Atletico Madrid and Valencia in the race for Greenwood, with negotiations at an advanced stage.

Donny van de Beek is also set to end his miserable career at Old Trafford as United close to completing a deal with Girona for the Dutch midfielder.

United are prepared to accept a transfer fee of £450,000 for a player who cost £35m from Ajax four years ago. However, the deal is also said to include bonuses of up to £16m as well as a sell-on clause.
