Everton fans taunted Liverpool supporters who endured a miserable evening at Goodison Park by mocking the Reds for making a mistake in the Premier League title race.

A shock defeat in the Merseyside derby leaves Liverpool with a mountain to climb as Jurgen Klopp’s side remain three points behind leaders Arsenal and just one point ahead of Man City, who have a game in hand.

Liverpool’s attackers were ineffective against city rivals Everton, while the visitors’ defense was broken down as Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin got on the scoresheet.

The Reds were previously unbeaten at their rivals’ homeland since 2010, when Everton also recorded two clean-sheet wins on that occasion.

It has been a happy place for Liverpool ever since and Toffees fans were keen to make the most of the rare victory over their rowdy neighbours.

Home fans rubbed salt in Liverpool’s wounds by emphatically chanting ‘you lost the league at Goodison Park’ to Klopp and his underperforming players.

That statement carries some weight now that Liverpool are the outside favorites among Arsenal and reigning champions Man City to win the English top-flight title.

Meanwhile, the win moves Sean Dyche’s side further clear of the league’s relegation zone, all but confirming their safety in the Premier League for next season.

Reds boss Klopp was realistic about his team’s chances of winning the title this season after the defeat and admitted they are out of the running unless there is a late ‘crisis’ elsewhere.

“I really feel for the people,” he said. ‘We have never lost here (under Klopp) and it feels very different. My apologies for that.

‘We need a crisis at Manchester City and Arsenal and we need to win football matches.

‘We are also not safe (to qualify for) the Champions League, so we just have to play better football. You can see we are in a hurry for the goal,” he added.
