Eve of Destruction: Comedian Shaun Micallef responds to brutal review of his quirky new talk show

Shaun Micallef has responded after being slammed by an Australian critic for his latest comedy series, Eve of Destruction.

The new talk show, which features actor Stephen Curry as a guest on the first episode, was slammed by critics as “filler TV.”

The journalist called the show’s quirky premise “terminally lame” and criticized the series for containing “activities suitable for elementary school children.”

Micallef posted a screenshot of The Guardian’s one-star review on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday. Lucas Buckmaster and contained a typically witty response.

“Sure, but when it comes to terminally lame filler, this is one of the best,” said the 63-year-old TV veteran.

Micallef’s Eve of Destruction, which kicked off on Wednesday, features a new celebrity guest each week as they talk about the two things in life they couldn’t leave behind when “a catastrophe” struck.

Upcoming guests include cricketer Usman Khawaja, comedian Mary Coustas and actress Rebecca Gibney.

Meanwhile, fans of the Mad as Hell star were quick to rave about Shaun’s new show.

“Refreshing and entertaining,” one follower messaged the star on Shaun’s X post, adding: “Great jokes. Keep it up Mr Micallef.”

“My husband and I are clearly fans of ‘filler’ TV because we both laughed out loud during this episode,” another user said.

Another fan raved: ‘I thought it was really funny – I loved it. It’s actually brave to be absurd, witty and ridiculous on Australian TV at the moment and you’re absolutely brilliant at it.’

Meanwhile, another fan also appeared to criticize Shaun’s bad review.

“I’m devastated I peed my pants laughing at a lame comment last night…,” they wrote.

The veteran comedian has appeared on a number of hit ABC shows, including Mad As Hell, The Ex PM and The Micallef Program, as well as several shows on commercial networks.

Fans were devastated in 2022 to hear that Mad as Hell had been discontinued after its debut in 2012.

The show, hosted by Shaun, is a satirical ratings hit for the ABC and has been a mainstay for ten years.

Mad as Hell has been met with critical acclaim since its airing.

In 2016, the show won a Logie Award for Most Outstanding Comedy Program, after winning an AACTA Award for Best Television Comedy or Light Entertainment Series in 2014.

In 2020, it won a second AAA award for Best Comedy Entertainment Program.
