Eurovision Song Contest’s Sam Ryder reflects on his epic interval performance as fans claim he overshadowed UK entry Mae Muller after her crushing defeat

Sam Ryder has reflected on his epic interval performance in the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 after fans claimed he was upstaged UK entry Mae Muller.

Mae, 25, represented the UK in Saturday’s final in Liverpool, but she finished second to last with 24 points in the final standings.

The Spaceman singer, 33, who finished second last year, shared an update on Instagram just hours after Mae’s crushing defeat.

Not acknowledging the UK’s disappointing result, Sam posts a clip of his own performance alongside Queen drummer Roger Taylor.

He wrote, “When you’re shredding and Rodger Taylor is beating the drums right next to you. PS who wants this guitar? It could be yours.’

Sam invited his fans to participate in his online contest to win his guitar from the interval performance.

His followers congratulated him after singing his new song Mountain, and he was amazingly joined on stage by Queen drummer Roger Taylor.

Last night, the crowd went wild for his performance and viewers took to Twitter to claim that Sam had “upstaged” Mae while praising his “sheer talent.”

One person wrote: ‘Poor Mae Muller is completely overshadowed by last year’s British entry. Britain might have had a chance with Sam Ryder and Queen at the #Eurovision House.”

Another said: ‘I just wondered how the UK would have fared if Sam Ryder sang his new song. We could have hosted again!’

A third tweeted: ‘UK back to reality huh. Sam Ryder was indeed a blip,” while a fourth wrote, “Sam Ryder should have won last year and this year! #Eurovision.’

A fifth commented: ‘Sam Ryder could easily have won the Eurovision Song Contest with that song he did in the break – sheer talent.’

Elsewhere, Mae returned to Twitter on Sunday and took to the social media site to thank her fans for their support.

She wrote: ‘I know I joke a lot but we really gave it our all in the last few months, not the outcome we hoped for but so proud of everyone and what we’ve accomplished on this journey.

“Congratulations to all countries, I will never forget this trip and I love you all.”

Performing her song I Wrote A Song, the singer finished second to last in the competition, scoring 24 points, beating only Germany who achieved 18 points.

Mae disappointed Eurovision fans with her live rendition that left viewers wondering if her microphone volume was low amid the quiet vocal quality.
