Ireland’s performance in the Eurovision Song Contest semi-final on Tuesday got the continent talking with many viewers predicting it could win the competition.
Bambie Thug, 31, a non-binary artist from County Cork, gave a breathtaking performance of their song Doomsday Blue to the crowd in Malmö, Sweden.
They sang while performing a ritual surrounded by candles and were joined on stage by a male dancer wearing demonic makeup and false teeth.
Ireland’s entry has caused quite a stir in recent weeks as it is radically different from anything the country has previously sent to Eurovision.

Bambie, who describe their music as ‘ouija pop’, felt pressure to deliver a good performance as Ireland have not qualified for the Eurovision final since Ryan O’Shaughnessy finished in 16th place with Together in 2018.
Speak with The standardthey said: ‘Yes, there is more pressure, but I also have complete confidence in my ability to perform.
“I’m very grateful to have this platform, especially as a non-binary person and as a little goth. I’m super proud and I’m just excited to have a ball on stage.”
They added: “I’ve had so many people draw me, make me bracelets and make cute things. [I’ve] I’ve had lots of lovely messages from parents about their kids loving the song and some strange kids who felt like they could get out of it.”

Although Ireland has struggled in the Eurovision Song Contest in recent years, the country is tied with Sweden for the most wins in the tournament’s history with seven.
Ireland last won in 1996 with the song The Voice by Eimear Quinn. Other memorable past winners include Johnny Logan and Dana.
The United Kingdom is represented by Olly Alexander, who has already qualified for the final, as Britain is one of the ‘Big Five’ countries that qualify automatically.
The Eurovision Song Contest final will be broadcast on BBC One on Saturday at 8pm.
