The Europa League match between Malmö and Union Berlin degenerated into chaos as both sets of fans blared torches before an explosion happened off the pitch.
Play at Eleda Stadium was halted for 20 minutes shortly after the second half started, with the players coming to safety and riot police wading in.
Torches and fireworks were thrown on either side of the stadium by both Malmö and Union fans. A larger firecracker then went off near where Union support security personnel stood.
Television footage showed a lit torch arching through the sky and landing on the field while the match was still in progress. After the game ended, more torches were thrown.
Union Berlin’s official Twitter account posted: ‘Bangers. Rockets onto the field from the Union end. The players left. They worry about the sidelines. The game is temporarily paused. B*******. My apologies.’
