An eight-year-old boy watched his father die as strangers tried to save the man who had just been pulled from the water of a busy beach.

Other beachgoers tried to help the man in his 30s after seeing him face down in the water at Ettalong Beach on the NSW central coast on Saturday afternoon.

A group of men helped pull the man onto a passing boat after others in the water flagged them down, but he had drowned by the time he got on board.

More to come.
