ESPN reporter Jeff Passan has revealed he broke his back after a tree fell on him – but he is not paralyzed and says he will make a full recovery.

Passan, 42, is an MLB insider for ESPN and has been with the company since 2018.

He took to Twitter on Monday to explain why he had been quiet for a few days midway through the 2023 season, revealing that he had a serious accident at his Kansas home.

“Sorry I haven’t posted lately,” he wrote. “While cleaning up after a major storm in KC, a large tree branch decided to fall and crush me.

The good news: I can still use my arms, legs and Twitter fingers. The bad news: I have a broken back.

“The vertebral fracture will heal. I will get better. I hope the pain eases between now and the trade deadline, although painkiller fueled tweets can be a fun time.

To my incredible family, friends and everyone at ESPN who have been so supportive, thank you. To the nurses, doctors and support staff at KU Med, I really appreciate your care and dedication.

“And to those who care so much about helping me bring news, especially this time of year, my back may be shot, but my phone still works.”

However, Passan seems cheerful – when he tweeted his statement explaining what happened, he captioned it: ‘Breaking: my back’.

He also tweeted a photo of the tree that landed on him, writing, “This is the culprit. You can be sure I’m going to make a bludgeon out of it.’

Before joining ESPN, Passan was a reporter for Yahoo for 13 years.

In 2021, the National Sports Media Association named Passan Sports Writer of the Year.
