Erling Haaland wins Premier League Golden Boot as Kevin De Bruyne takes Playmaker award

Erling Haaland officially wins the Premier League’s Golden Boot after record-breaking debut campaign at Manchester City, while Kevin De Bruyne claims the Playmaker award

Erling Haaland has been officially crowned the Premier League Golden Boot winner for the 2022-23 season.

The record-breaking striker couldn’t improve on his tally of 36 goals as he remained on the bench as Manchester City finished their league campaign with a 1-0 defeat away at Brentford.

His team-mate Kevin De Bruyne – who was completely left out against Brentford – meanwhile claims the Playmaker award for most assists with 16.

Haaland, just 22 years old – and signed in his debut season from Borussia Dortmund last summer – has set an almost unthinkable benchmark, becoming the top goalscoring player in a single league game after breaking Alan Shearer’s record of 35 goals.

He ends the season six goals clear of nearest rival Harry Kane, who also had a fine season individually despite playing in a faltering Tottenham side, finishing on 30 after his brace against Leeds.

The Golden Boot is just the latest accolade in Haaland’s ever-expanding collection, as well as becoming the first player to be awarded both Player of the Season and Young Player of the Year in the Premier League’s annual awards.

Haaland was also voted Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year at the beginning of May and will lift his first Premier League trophy with Manchester City on Sunday.

The Norwegian will now turn his attention to City’s upcoming cup final against Manchester United in the FA Cup and Inter Milan in the Champions League, with the Premier League champions chasing a historic Treble.

As has De Bruyne, 31, who has had another stunning campaign in City’s midfield and has once again proved crucial to his side’s success.

Speaking on Thursday night, Haaland checked De Bruyne as he insisted he couldn’t do it without his teammates.

“I just want to thank all the club’s staff and my teammates for making this possible.”

“If Manchester City plays well, the striker will score goals. Last year they scored I don’t know how many goals, so of course as a substitute striker I would score goals.’
