Rene Meulensteen has compared the impact Erik ten Hag is having on the current Manchester United squad to that of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Dutchman Meulensteen, who spent six years as Ferguson’s manager at United, including five as first-team manager, hailed the impact Ten Hag has had and compared some of his methods to the Scotsman’s.
speaking to TalkSport The day after United’s win over Newcastle in the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, Meulensteen said Ten Hag’s impact on United was “very similar to what Sir Alex created.”
“It’s very similar to what Sir Alex Ferguson created,” he said. “At least in the time I was there, it was all about hard work, but at the same time, you know, enjoying what you’re doing, enjoying what you’re doing in training.”
“I always remember Sir Alex Ferguson saying that everything you do in training, Rene, will show up in the game, good and bad.
Rene Meulensteen has compared the methods of Erik ten Hag to Sir Alex Ferguson after the Carabao Cup triumph.
The Dutchman spent six years working with Ferguson as Manchester United’s first team manager.
“So, we make sure that we all get the right deals in there and I’m sure Erik, with his staff, does the exact same thing.”
Muelensteen has jumped around a bit since leaving United a decade ago. His work has taken him to Fulham, where he was manager during 2013-14, and then to Maccabi Haifa.
Ten Hag himself has spoken of his delight at having enjoyed some time with the legendary former United manager, who stepped down from his role 10 years ago this year in May 2013.
The two enjoyed dinner together which was caught by a customer inside the restaurant.
Ten Hag has penned an open letter to United fans saying they are “proud” of their coaching staff and players as they walk again after Sunday’s win and chase another three trophies this season.
“I wanted to take the time to address you directly this morning,” Ten Hag wrote. “When I arrived at the club, we discussed the challenge and importance of bringing this group of players together with our incredible fans,” he wrote. ‘Believe me, this squad knows exactly how important you are. The bond between the fans and the team is there for all to see and what we experienced together yesterday will only further strengthen that bond.
‘The atmosphere you created at Wembley was incredible. From the first minute to the last you were there with us, driving the team, supporting them and encouraging them to cross the line to bring the trophy back to Manchester.
‘For those of you who couldn’t be there, we felt your support before, during and after the game. Know that each and every one of you will always do your part in the success of this team.
Erik ten Hag won his first trophy as United boss when his team defeated Newcastle on Sunday.
‘I am proud of my players and staff for their preparation and performances. Yesterday we saw the desire, the spirit and the determination that we must demand from all those who represent Manchester United.
‘We set ourselves high standards every day. At Wembley we met those demands and were rewarded with our first trophy together.
‘We know the importance of cutlery throughout the history of this great club. We are very happy to bring the trophy back to Old Trafford, but we are by no means satisfied and we will not stop there.
“Together we have experienced the feeling of what it means to win together for Manchester United. It is truly magnificent and will only make each of us hungry for more success.’
