- The Premier League giants have given up their search for a new manager
- Despite sounding out potential candidates, a new contract is being discussed
Erik ten Hag will remain at Manchester United as the club suspends its search for a new manager.
The Premier League giants have thrown their support behind the Dutchman and are discussing a new contract, despite sounding out potential suitors after a disappointing season at Old Trafford in which his side finished eighth.
Sources have revealed that Ten Hag’s case was strengthened by the club’s shock victory in the FA Cup final over rivals City.
Potential replacements, including Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Thomas Frank, were sounded out by United officials, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS leading the process.
However, Tuchel stepped back from the role after meeting Ratcliffe in Monaco for talks last week.
Erik ten Hag will remain as manager of Manchester United following the club’s seasonal review
United carried out a performance review after the season, which included discussions with Ten Hag. When considering all the different outcomes, they would have come to the clear conclusion that 54-year-old Ten Hag was the best man for the job.
Mail Sport understands United officials want to see how Ten Hag operates under what they believe will be a new structure aimed at ensuring he is given the best opportunity to succeed. Omar Berrada will join from Manchester City as CEO on July 13. Jason Wilcox has already joined as technical director, while talks are underway to bring Newcastle’s Dan Ashworth to Old Trafford as sporting director.
The discussions with Ten Hag are said to have been positive, with both the club and the manager on the same page. Discussions have been opened about a contract extension.
