Erik ten Hag denounced the injustice against Manchester United last night after a controversial injury time penalty saw his team defeated by West Ham.

Casemiro thought he had earned a point for United when he headed home an equalizer in the 81st minute, after Crysencio Summerville had recently given the Hammers the lead.

But Ten Hag and his players were left furious when referee David Coote awarded the hosts a penalty after a lengthy VAR investigation.

Matthijs de Ligt is said to have fouled Danny Ings in the penalty area, but the defender claimed the striker had handled the ball in the build-up.

Coote gave no error in real time, but was sent to the monitor and chose to overturn his original decision.

Jarrod Bowen converted the penalty to give Julen Lopetegui’s side only their third victory this season.

“In football, the best team does not always win, that was clear,” said an angry Ten Hag.

‘It wasn’t clear how VAR worked, they messed up their process. This season we feel wronged three times.

‘Before the season they explained the VAR process and only when it is clear will it be clear when they have to intervene.

‘What they didn’t do against Spurs when they should have interfered with Bruno [Fernandes] red card, they didn’t do it.

“Now they make the wrong decision and both have a major impact on the games.”

The Premier League said VAR official Michael Oliver had ruled there was significant contact with Ings’ lower leg and therefore recommended an on-field review.

Ten Hag was asked whether the fact that it was a senior referee who had requested the review had any bearing on Coote’s decision to overturn his original decision.

‘I don’t criticize anyone, I criticize the process. Of course there are people who guide the process.

‘The off-field VAR was Michael Oliver. The field [referee] have to make a decision at the last minute.

‘I think it took three minutes to decide and make the call. But then you have to show great personality to ignore this decision by an experienced VAR [referee] has made.’
