Manchester United have given Erik ten Hag a one-year contract extension until June 2026, the club have announced.

The Dutchman is in talks with United over a new deal after co-owner Ineos decided to keep him on following an end-of-season review.

The new contract on current terms signals greater support for Ten Hag from the leadership team, which also includes new sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.

Talks are still ongoing with Ruud van Nistelrooy and René Hake about the role of his new assistants at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag, whose current contract had one year left on it, said: ‘I am very pleased that we have reached an agreement with the club to continue our partnership.

Looking back over the past two years, we can proudly look back on two trophies and many examples of progress since I joined.

‘However, we must also be aware that there is still a lot of work to be done to reach the level expected of Manchester United, which means fighting for the English and European titles.

‘During my discussions with the club, we have found that we are in complete agreement on our vision to achieve those goals and we are determined to embark on that journey together.’

Ashworth welcomed the news ahead of Ten Hag’s return for pre-season training on Monday, saying: “With two trophies in the last two seasons, Erik has cemented his reputation as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football.

‘The evaluation of last season showed that there were areas for improvement, but the club also came to the clear conclusion that Erik was the best partner for us to work with to improve standards and results.

‘This group of players and staff have already shown that they can compete and win at the top level; now we need to do that more consistently.

Now that our football leadership team has been strengthened, we look forward to working with Erik to realise our shared ambitions for this football club.’
