Erik ten Hag has told Antony, the Manchester United winger worth £86million, that he must earn the right to play.

The Brazilian star has made just one appearance this season as an 89th-minute substitute for Brighton and will be hoping to earn his first start in the Carabao Cup third round against Barnsley at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

“You will see tomorrow what the line-up looks like,” said Ten Hag, who has favoured Marcus Rashford, Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho on the wings for the first five games of the season.

“We have training every day and the players have to earn the right to play. If players do the right thing in training and the attitude is good, and if they perform in training, then they earn the right to play.”

Ten Hag won the Carabao Cup in his first season at Old Trafford and dismissed suggestions that new co-owners Ineos would set their sights on bigger prizes.

“I wouldn’t say it’s unimportant,” the Dutchman added. “The FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, they’re important. I see the attention from all the teams, all the owners, all the managers.

‘If they win the trophies like Liverpool did last year, and I see all the teams fighting for it, we want the same. In football, winning trophies is very important. You have five chances and our goal is to win all the games if possible.’
