Erik ten Hag reveals he has only seen Phil Jones train for ’20 MINUTES’ since arriving at Man United, following the club’s decision to release the injury-plagued centre-back at the end of the season

Erik ten Hag has explained that he saw Phil Jones train just 20 minutes this season before the centre-back ruined his campaign with an injury.

It was confirmed on Friday morning that Jones – United’s current longest-serving player – would be leaving the club in the summer.

Jones has been hampered by recurring problems and has made just five appearances for the Red Devils in the past three-and-a-half years.

Ten Hag was questioned about the decision to release Jones once his current contract expires in June, during his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of a weekend clash with Bournemouth.

The Dutchman explained: ‘Yes, 20 minutes, first training of the year!

“He’s had a great career, what he’s accomplished. Win the Premier League, win the FA Cup, win the Europa League, be present at two World Cups.

Great career at Man United. All credits to his career,” he added.

Jones’ departure will free up space on United’s wage bill amid a summer of expected reinforcements at Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old previously stressed while working as a television pundit at United’s Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle in February that Ten Hag made him feel ‘appreciated’.

He leaves United as one of their most decorated players in recent seasons as winners of the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League and League Cup.

Jones posted a heartfelt announcement confirming his departure, stating that his United journey had come to an end after making 229 appearances for the club.

Part of the lengthy statement posted on social media read: “It’s been very difficult these past few years. That cannot be denied. There’s no escaping that.

“My family has been absolutely instrumental in keeping me on track and focused, trying to get fit and playing more.

Meanwhile, United are nervously waiting to see if Marcus Rashford will be available for their upcoming Premier League meeting on the south coast.

Ten Hag revealed that his top scorer of the season trained with the team for a week, but called in sick on Friday.
