Erik ten Hag has jumped to the defense of his French striker Anthony Martial after he was booed during Manchester United's 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

United suffered an embarrassing defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday as Andoni Iraola's side extended their unbeaten run to five games.

Dominic Solanke, Phillip Billing and Marcos Senesi all scored to further pile the pressure on boss ten Hag.

The United boss has struggled to get his side to play consistently, with the team and individual players blowing hot and cold.

As a result, the Dutchman has spoken out about Martial after the striker put in a lackluster performance on Saturday, registering just one effort on target and recording the fewest touches of any starter.

Martial was substituted for Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund in the 55th minute and drew boos as he trudged off the pitch.

This was the second time this season that the Frenchman has been booed by his own fans, having also been spotted in action against Brighton.

Ten Hag insisted: 'Two weeks ago against Everton he played a very good match!

'So he definitely has the competence and the ability to play, so I don't think it's fair to go to one player now after a performance like this. As a group we completely failed.”

The Red Devils boss continued to talk about his side's performances as they face a difficult run of games.

United play Bayern Munich in a must-win Champions League match on Tuesday before traveling to Anfield to take on Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.

Ten Hag reflected: 'As a team I don't think we are good enough to be consistent and we have to work on improving that as a team.'

'As a group we have to get better, that is a fact. We have to toughen up and be ready for the match from the start.

'I already said it on Friday. In this league you can't be not playing at the highest level because you're getting killed – and that's what happened in the first five minutes.”
