Roy Keane has insisted Erik ten Hag is on ‘trial’ at Manchester United for the rest of the season.

Ten Hag has had a nightmare at United, where he faced a number of issues surrounding player discipline.

Marcus Rashford recently spent hours spotting in a Belfast nightclub before calling in sick for training, while the likes of Jadon Sancho have left after a public row with the Dutchman.

Things weren’t much better on the pitch either: United were in eighth place in the Premier League on Sunday against West Ham, which they won 3-0.

And former United captain Keane is not sure about Ten Hag’s future. Speaking to Sky Sports, he suggested the Red Devils boss’s spell in charge could end at the end of the season, depending on how the rest of the year goes.

“It’s a harsh word to use ‘on trial’ because most managers are under pressure, but when you’re manager of Manchester United the pressure comes,” Keane said.

‘Is he on trial? Yeah, that’s probably until the end of the season. If he doesn’t get his hands on the FA Cup or the Champions League, the pressure will increase.”

United are looking to improve off-the-field procedures, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS set to soon be approved as minority owners and put their own stamp on the goings-on at the club.

It is possible that they will look for their own manager, but they hope that Ten Hag can turn things around after a number of difficult years as manager.

Former United defender Gary Neville, also speaking to Sky, admitted that Ten Hag’s future could be in doubt despite the club backing him with money to spend and despite the civil wars with players to date.

“It’s the biggest decision for the new owners in the coming months,” Neville said. “They are going to bring in a sporting director and a head of recruitment, but whether they will keep the manager is something we will all have to wait and see.”

United climbed to sixth place in the Premier League after beating the Hammers on Sunday.
