Erik ten Hag insisted he has no regrets after Manchester United's woeful exit from Europe on Tuesday evening.

A 1–0 defeat to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford left United in last place in their Champions League group for only the second time, as they finished with the club's lowest ever points total.

United also missed out on the consolation of the Europa League spot as Kingsley Coman's 70th-minute strike handed Ten Hag's side a twelfth defeat in 24 games this season.

When asked how he looks back on a miserable Group A campaign, Ten Hag says: 'Not with regret. We didn't make it, but we have to accept it. We must learn from it.

'We played good football in the Champions League. We need to take some good performances back to the Premier League. We want to get back in the Champions League.

'We didn't lose today, that's clear. We performed well, but we also made mistakes. In the end it wasn't good enough.

'The facts are that we don't have enough points. We are disappointed as a group, as a manager I am disappointed. We should have done better.'

United had just one shot on target in a match they needed to win to have any chance of going through.

Coman's winner meant they conceded 15 goals in the group stage, more than any other English club in Champions League history.

'Today's performance was very good. We didn't deserve to lose, but we lost the game,” said Ten Hag.

'But Bayern is also a good team. Even when they are not in the game, they have individual class and they only need one moment. Unfortunately that happened.

“We know we want to be more consistent. As a manager I have to improve the team, I have to guide them and the players have to take responsibility. We have to do that together.' There was more bad news for Ten Hag as Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw became the latest victims of an injury-hit season.

Both England defenders were injured in the first half and will now miss Sunday's match with arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield, when captain Bruno Fernandes will also be suspended.

“We have to wait 24 hours for an assessment,” said Ten Hag, who was also without Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial due to illness.

IT'S ALL GOING OFF!

It's All Kicking Off is an exciting new podcast from Mail Sport that promises a different take on Premier League football.

It is available on MailOnline, Mail+, YouTube, Apple music And Spotify.

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel admitted he expected United to challenge Bayern more closely for qualification to the knockout stages.

“Yes, this is a huge club and not what you expect,” Tuchel said. 'In the group you expect United to challenge for the group win and a place in the round of 16, but some games changed in the blink of an eye.

'Of course I have sympathy (for Ten Hag). It's not an easy time, but I'm pretty sure he knows what to do next and doesn't need my advice or pats on the back. He's experienced enough to get through this.”

England captain Harry Kane, who set up the Coman's goal, added: 'It felt like we were in control of the game and had the better chances. We were calm and knew we could hurt them in the fast transitions.”
