Marcus Rashford has been ruled out of Manchester United’s FA Cup match in Newport County due to illness.

Rashford’s withdrawal comes amid reports that the United striker missed training on Friday after heading to a nightclub in Belfast on Thursday evening.

Rashford was due to return to Manchester on a private jet at 7am on Friday morning but was too ill to train.

United initially said they were told the video of Rashford entering Thompson’s Garage nightclub was taken on Wednesday night and that he had the day off on Thursday.

They have not responded to reports that the images were actually from Thursday evening. Asked about the Rashford situation before kick-off, Erik ten Hag said it was an internal matter and added: “I will deal with it.”

Ten Hag publicly reprimanded the player for celebrating his 26th birthday at China White nightclub in October, hours after United’s defeat in the Manchester derby, calling his actions ‘unacceptable’.

“I am aware of it, I have spoken to him about it,” said Ten Hag, who also dropped Rashford from Wolves last season because he was late for a team meeting. ‘It’s unacceptable. I told him, he apologized and that was it. It’s an internal matter.’

The United boss will undoubtedly face more questions about Rashford’s discipline after the match against Newport, according to the latest reports.

A United spokesman said Rashford was too ill to make the trip to south Wales for Sunday’s fourth round and would remain in Carrington to train while he recovers.
