  • Mason Greenwood and United have mutually agreed that the striker will leave the club
  • It followed a lengthy internal investigation into the player’s conduct
  • Erik ten Hag stressed that his sole focus is on improving United’s performance

Erik ten Hag insisted his full focus is on improving performance after a week that saw Manchester United come under scrutiny for dealing with Mason Greenwood.

United announced on Monday that Greenwood would be leaving the club following a five-month internal investigation into sex offense allegations.

Senior executives concluded that the 21-year-old had not “committed the crimes” for which he was initially charged before the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the case of attempted rape, assault involving actual bodily harm and controlling and coercive conduct earlier this year.

They seemed ready to re-integrate Greenwood into Ten Hag’s side before deciding to sell the striker, drawing interest from abroad.

“Look, we are not yet where we want to be with our team,” Ten Hag told United against Nottingham Forest on Saturday after the defeat at Tottenham.

“There is a lot of work, my focus is on the players who are available. I only have statements about our performance, our team and where we need to improve. It is clear: we must improve.

“What United fans expect is us to win. I am responsible for that. That’s where all my efforts go.’

United have been hit by injuries to Mason Mount and Luke Shaw, with the left back’s problem compounded and he is expected to be sidelined for a long period of time.

Ten Hag also ruled that Rasmus Hojlund would not play in the game against Forest this summer.

“Not before tomorrow,” said Ten Hag about Hojlund. “Today he came to team practice for the first time, so next week I expect him to do a full week. He is very close to making the selection.

Luke will be taller than Mason. It will also be a few weeks before Tyrell is back. We certainly have the solutions in our team to deal with that. You hope to avoid this scenario, but when it happens you have to be ready.”
