The wife of Blue Jays reliever Erik Swanson has revealed that their four-year-old son Toby has left the intensive care unit after being hit by a car on Sunday.

Toby Swanson was taken to a hospital in Clearwater, Florida, in critical condition after the accident, with Swanson leaving Toronto’s spring training to be with his injured child.

But after reportedly recovering well, along with his father and family, mother Madison has now announced that Toby has left pediatric intensive care.

“I have no words, I don’t know where to start,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself holding Toby’s hand in the hospital on her Instagram Story.

‘We have been overwhelmed by an enormous amount of love and support in recent days.

Madison Swanson shared a positive update about their son after the terrifying accident

“To the people who have reached out in any capacity, we will never be able to put into words how meaningful it has been. We don’t have the mental capacity to reach all of you, but we see you, we hear you, it’s what has gotten our little boy through it all.

‘The most important update is that Toby is no longer in the PICU and we are continuing to take it day by day. God is so good and we are so blessed @swannypops.”

Madison also paid tribute to those who helped her son, both immediately after his accident and when he was airlifted to hospital in St Petersburg.

She added, “We are so grateful for the quick first responders to the accident, for the pedestrians who helped while we waited for the next step, and for the AMAZING staff at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, someone who truly cared about my little man has been watching. ‘

Reports in Canada indicate that Toby was struck by a 2024 Ford Expedition near the Opal Sands Resort on Sunday.

The driver of the vehicle is said to have cooperated with authorities.

Swanson recently introduced himself with Toby on Instagram, showing the smiling boy in a Blue Jays sweater. It’s unclear where the photo was taken, but it appears the two were at Toronto’s spring training facility in Dunedin.

The Blue Jays acquired Swanson in a trade with the Seattle Mariners in November 2022. In his first season with the Blue Jays, the 30-year-old right-hander played in 69 games in 2023 and finished with a 4-2 record, 2.97 . ERA, four saves and 75 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings.
