Free agent point guard Eric Gordon has agreed to a deal with the Phoenix Suns, according to reports from Shines Charania.

The 34-year-old was waived by the Los Angeles Clippers on June 28 rather than guaranteed his contract.

If they had kept him around, Gordon would have owed more than $20 million, according to Spotrac.

Last season, Gordon averaged 12.4 points, 2.7 assists and just under two rebounds in 69 games in Los Angeles and with the Houston Rockets.

Gordon reportedly turned around city offers from other teams and considered a reunion in Houston and a move to Golden State before settling on Phoenix.

The former Indiana University seventh overall pick has a history of winning the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award and was a member of the All-Rookie second team in 2007.

He arrives in Phoenix at a tense time, as the team prepares to run to the NBA Finals with a new core squad.

Last month, the Suns traded for Bradley Beal – getting the Wizards’ former shooting guard to compliment point guard Devin Booker and forward Kevin Durant.

It sets up Phoenix with a new ‘Big Three’ of Beal, Booker and Durant, as well as the talented Deandre Ayton.

Gordon would likely compete with Cameron Payne for playing time as a backup to Booker.
