Eric Dier’s omission from Tottenham squad for Brentford clash is ANOTHER disapproval for the England defender… after Ange Postecoglou said he intends to shorten his squad

The omission of Eric Dier from the Tottenham Hotspur squad for the opening game of the Brentford season is another disapproval for the English defender.

Dier has been overlooked as captain as new boss Ange Postecoglou forges a new era after Harry Kane was sold to Bayern Munich and Hugo Lloris was poised to follow him out the door.

Postecoglou handed the captain’s armband to Heung-min Son, his captain with James Maddison and Cristian Romero as vice-captains.

If that wasn’t hint enough for Dier, his omission from the squad to travel to Brentford certainly was.

At 29, he is the last of the old guard still standing, with one year left on his contract.

He has 49 caps for England and was part of Gareth Southgate’s side at last year’s World Cup, but lost his form in the second half of last season when he struggled with a groin injury.

Dier underwent surgery at the end of the season which put him behind others in pre-season and is clearly not central to Postecoglou’s plans.

Romero and new £43 million centre-back Micky van de Ven started in central defense at Brentford with Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez on the bench.

Perhaps it’s a hint to Dier that he might want to consider leaving before the transfer closes at the end of the month.

Postecoglou said on Friday his priority was to shorten his squad before he can pursue further targets in the market, a striker, a midfielder and another centre-back.
