Eric Bailly has sent Manchester United fans an emotional farewell message after sealing a move to Besiktas.

The Ivorian defender is leaving Old Trafford after seven years, having originally joined the club from LaLiga side Villarreal for £30 million.

Bailly’s time at the club was unfortunately plagued with injuries. He made 25 Premier League appearances in his first season, but no more than 13 in the six years that followed.

The 29-year-old was not part of United manager Erik ten Hag’s plans. Last season he was loaned to Marseille and has now signed a one-year contract in Turkey.

In a social media post, Bailly wrote: ‘As I leave this club after many years of incredible memories, outstanding teammates and trophies, I would like to express my deep gratitude.

“This chapter may be coming to an end, but the friendships and memories will forever remain in my heart. The fans here are the real champions. Thank you for everything, united forever.”

Bailly made 113 appearances for United in all competitions, scoring his only goal against Swansea in 2017.

His last league appearance for United was a 3-1 win over Burnley in December 2021.

Bailly won the Europa League, Carabao Cup and Community Shield during his time at Old Trafford.

He is the second United player to move to Turkey this summer, after Fenerbahce signed Brazilian midfielder Fred for £13 million last month.

The defender had earlier interest from Fulham and Marseille, among others, but failed to reach agreement on terms with both clubs.

United made a defensive signing of their own this summer, bringing back Jonny Evans on a one-year contract.
