Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has reminded Renato Veiga not to forget everything he has done for him as he spoke about the 21-year-old Portuguese springboard for Borussia Dortmund this month.
It is believed that Veiga has expressed an interest in joining the German giants on a permanent basis, which would leave Maresca short-changed as the versatile player has been a good option at left-back.
However, Veiga would like to be deployed as a central defender. While Maresca is open to letting Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka and others leave in January, he is less keen on losing Veiga.
Maresca said ahead of Tuesday night’s Premier League visit to Bournemouth: ‘We’ll see if something happens. I don’t know that there is a match for him.
‘We bought Renato from Basel. He arrived and played well in several positions and allowed him to join the national team for the first time in his life. Even if he didn’t play in his position (centre back).
“We are happy that all the players are going to the international team, especially young players who come to Chelsea, play in four or five different positions and have the opportunity to play in the national team. We are very proud of that.’

When asked what he had told Veiga in private, Maresca continued: “I had a conversation with Renato and said exactly the same thing I said to you.
‘Playing in the position he plays for us gives him the opportunity to join an international team and gives him the opportunity to attract speculation, which means clubs are looking for him. Clubs look for players who do well, not poorly.
“For me, if there’s a player who wants to play in one position, he’s going to have a hard time. They have to adapt, play in different positions. It’s a good thing for the team and the club.’
