English winemaker looks for sales sparkle from Coronation

English winemaker Nyetimber predicts a ‘colliding sales summer’ after the coronation weekend

Bumper sales: Nyetimber boss Eric Heerema

English winemaker Nyetimber has predicted a ‘colliding sales summer’ after the coronation weekend.

Chief executive and chairman Eric Heerema said the Sussex-based company was anticipating “strong demand” for homegrown bubbles over the May holiday.

Sales have risen sharply in recent years, partly thanks to the warmer temperatures for grape cultivation.

Sales of English sparkling wine rose nearly 60 percent last year during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend, Heerema said.

And this summer he also expects to raise a glass to a sales boost.

The coronation of King Charles III on Saturday, May 6, holds special significance for Nye-timmer, who has served at many royal events.

“Consumers are particularly proud to defend and celebrate British goods and craftsmanship,” Heerema said.

Nyetimber has followed rival Chapel Down in releasing a £39.50 limited-edition wine for the coronation, using grapes from West Sussex. Heerema said: ‘We expect a great summer after the coronation weekend.’

The winery hopes to produce 2 million bottles a year by 2026.
