Dawid Malan admits his axing by Hundred franchise Trent Rockets has put him in a ‘pretty bad place’ as batsman aims for World Cup spot after scoring 54 in England’s T20 victory over New Zealand

  • Dawid Malan made an important 54 on Wednesday as England beat New Zealand
  • The batter has now admitted to being “disappointed” with his Trent Rockets’ axe
  • He added that he “didn’t know” where the Harry Brook comparisons came from

Dawid Malan has played down suggestions that he is keeping Harry Brook out of England’s World Cup squad – and wants to push for a starting spot when the tournament starts next month.

Malan, whose 42-ball 54 broke England’s chase in New Zealand’s seven-wicket T20 thrashing at Durham on Wednesday, was also hit after being axed by Trent Rockets during the Hundred.

“I was disappointed with that,” he said ahead of today’s second T20 in Manchester. “It was difficult to be dropped after four games on the day you were picked for England.

That put me in a pretty bad position. The rest of the year I hit the ball well and scored points everywhere and suddenly I’m out of shape, which is a lot of nonsense, as I showed in Durham.’

Brooks 27-ball 43 not out did nothing to silence those who believe he should be part of England’s provisional 15-man World Cup squad, which is subject to change before September 28. But Malan said:

“I know people compare me to Brooky, but I hit top three and he hits 4, 5, 6, so I don’t know where that comparison comes from.”

Malan, 35, is looking to take the field for England’s tournament opener against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on October 5. “I was chosen to score points and win games,” he said. “I’m not here to please anyone.

“I may not be the favorite of the crowd, the fans, the commentators and the press, but all I can do is score points when I get the chance.

“I don’t know who will top the league table, but hopefully I can put pressure on the selectors to pick an XI and keep me in it.”
