Dave the Cat, the cat adopted by the England team during the 2022 World Cup, has finally come home to the UK.

The stray tabby became England’s unofficial mascot in Qatar, after regularly joining the players for dinner at their Al Wakrah hotel base throughout the tournament.

Kyle Walker and John Stones, the Manchester City duo, particularly shined on their new friend, vowing to bring the cat back to the UK if Gareth Southgate’s men win the World Cup.

The Three Lions unfortunately went down in the quarter finals, with a loss to France. However, despite their elimination, the players kept their promise and got rescuers to start the handover process.

The two-year-old cat, who was named ‘Dave’, has now arrived in the UK, with a spokesperson for the Qatar Animal Welfare Society stating: ‘VIP Dave, the cat of the England football team, has arrived safely in the UK to start a new life.’

However, it is unclear at this stage which England team will house the famous cat now that it has completed its journey from Qatar to the UK, with Walker and Stones leading the way to give Dave a home.

Kalvin Phillips, 27, declared the cat England’s mascot. Fellow City star Phil Foden, 22, and Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling, 28, are also said to be big fans.

However, Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson won’t be a contender after making his feelings known about cats and not a fan of him roaming the hotel.

Yet Walker revealed earlier this year that given his and Stone’s busy schedule, Dave’s new home could be with England’s head of security.

Narrate Sky Sports when asked about the animal’s future, “Tony, the head of security, he left – that was his last tournament.” Me and John, as parents, decided that Tony would be a great adoptive father for Dave.’

Dave cast a spell on the City duo after they crashed their evening meals during their World Cup shift, and were seen taking to social media to feed their new friend.

Walker told the FA’s official media outlet at the time: “He was just there one day, so we just adopted him, me and Stonesy.

John called him Dave. Dave is welcome at the table. Some people really don’t like the cat, but I love him.’

It was Stones who named the cat Dave, who has since been cared for by the Qatar Animal Welfare Society (QAWS), chipped, vaccinated and neutered, ready for his new life.

The cat made headlines in Qatar again after scrapping with a fellow moggie and having to have his paw bandaged after the fight.

His wound from the scrap metal turned into an abscess and had to be treated by vets and given antibiotics to heal. The injury was then given a special bandage in England’s colors to keep the skin clean.
