England under-21 boss is ‘RELIEVED’ that Man City’s Cole Palmer turned up ready for the Euros

England U21 boss Lee Carsley admits he is ‘SOLVED’

  • The 21-year-old played in training on Tuesday after partying on Monday
  • Palmer’s teammate Rico Lewis was left out of the squad, but is on standby
  • Despite training with the seniors, Levi Colwill is expected to travel to Euros

Lee Carsley admitted to being relieved that Cole Palmer had arrived in England’s Under-21 camp ready for the European Championship after Manchester City’s three-day celebration.

The winners of the City’s Treble thoroughly enjoyed their historic performance, with the booze finally ending on Monday night.

Palmer played a part in England’s training on Tuesday before undoing a full session on Wednesday and is part of a great team heading into the tournament in Romania and Georgia, where their campaign kicks off next Thursday.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect,” said Carsley. “Cole is very sensible. You’ve seen the pictures on the television and until he actually walks through the door… I was relieved when I actually saw him.

“He will sleep a lot in the next few days, but it’s great that he had such a good experience. He looked a little tired, but that’s to be expected.

Palmer’s teammate Rico Lewis (right) is not on the traveling squad, in part due to his age

“He is very motivated to do well in this tournament, we also have to be realistic with the demands we place on him, because he is not used to always playing 90 minutes.” Palmer’s teammate, 18-year-old Rico Lewis, has been left out of the 23-man tour group. Lewis was briefed by Carsley earlier this week and is now on a reserve list.

Levi Colwill is training with the seniors, but Carsley expects the defender to stay with the Under 21 for the European Championship.

“We have taken Rico’s age into account, he will have a full campaign next year,” added Carsley. He has played a part in City’s success.

‘Of [Chelsea’s] Lewis Hall, we have to consider the amount of stress and pressure they’ve been under. It’s important for their age that he picks himself up and gets his energy back for next season.’
