England team news: Marc Guehi to start in defence as Trent Alexander-Arnold could play in midfield

England team news: Marc Guehi starts with Harry Maguire – and Trent Alexander-Arnold is poised for a midfield role – as Gareth Southgate shakes up his side in Malta

  • Marc Guehi is gearing up to defend England’s defense tonight alongside Harry Maguire
  • England play against Malta as they continue their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold will also start and could play in midfield

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi will team up with Harry Maguire at the heart of England’s defense in Malta tonight.

Guehi is on the verge of earning only his second international start in tonight’s European Championship qualifier in Valletta.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is also lined up to start, with manager Gareth Southgate alluding to a midfield role for the Liverpool star last night.

“You know I think he’s more than capable of playing there and it can be very exciting,” said Southgate.

“If we were to do that, we wouldn’t expect perfection because there’s a lot to learn, especially without the ball. They are different parts of the field.

“With the ball it’s an easier transition for him now. He plays a bit more for his club there, so it’s definitely something for us to consider.”

Harry Kane will lead the attack, with Bukayo Saka and James Maddison hoping for victory.
