England have been dealt a blow after Marc Guehi was shown a yellow card three minutes ago in the last 16 against Slovakia, ruling him out of a potential quarter-final.

The Crystal Palace star, one of England’s best players at Euro 2024 so far, was shown a yellow card for a challenge on David Strelec.

Guehi was put in trouble by Kieran Trippier and brought down Strelec.

Referee Umut Meler gave the central defender a yellow card, but his foul prevented Slovakia from launching a dangerous attack.

Guehi was one of two England players to receive a yellow card in the opening eight minutes, while Kobbie Mainoo, given his first start of the tournament by Gareth Southgate, was also given a yellow card.

Guehi also played a part in Tuesday’s dull 0-0 draw against Slovenia in England’s final group match.

According to UEFA rules, two yellow cards in separate matches will lead to a suspension in the next match. Bookings will be cleared after the quarter-finals.

Guehi’s absence from a possible meeting with Switzerland in the round of 16 is also causing Southgate a defensive headache.

Joe Gomez, Lewis Dunk and Ezri Konsa could all replace Guehi, but the trio have yet to play any minutes in Germany.

Kyle Walker can also play as a centre-back, but is Southgate’s first choice on the right side of defence.
