England stars return to club training three weeks after last-gasp Euro 2024 final heartache against Spain – less than a fortnight before start of the new Premier League season

  • England heartbreakingly lost the final of the 2024 European Championship 2-1 to Spain on July 14
  • All the Three Lions stars were given some extra time off by their clubs
  • Many English stars returned to training for the new season last weekend

England’s Euro 2024 stars have returned to training as they prepare for the new season.

The Three Lions came so close to victory at this summer’s tournament in Germany, until they tragically lost 2-1 to Spain in the final.

The match took place on Sunday 14th July. All the English players were given extra time off by their clubs to rest and recuperate.

And on Sunday, Arsenal stars Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Aaron Ramsdale were seen again at their London Colney training ground.

They joined the rest of their teammates at the Gunners, many of whom had already toured the US in preparation for the season.

Saka was one of England’s star players in Germany. The winger started all seven of England’s matches at the tournament. The 22-year-old scored the decisive equaliser against Switzerland in the quarter-final, before slotting home his penalty in the ensuing shoot-out.

Meanwhile, Rice was also back at Arsenal, after the midfielder became a key player in Gareth Southgate’s team.

Aaron Ramsdale greeted his team-mates in similar fashion after a few minutes’ absence in extra time, despite the former Bournemouth keeper being England’s No. 2 during the period England played in Germany and not having been on the pitch for a single minute.

The resumption of training on Sunday meant Saka, Rice and Ramsdale were given three weeks off after their performances this summer.

They seemed happy to be back, as a video on Arsenal’s social media showed the trio embracing and catching up with some colleagues, with Saka giving Mikel Arteta a particularly warm hug.

A similar story played out at Liverpool, where Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold were among the international stars to return after an extra break.

The Three Lions duo were seen catching up with other returning players from the tournament, including Dutchmen Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, along with Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, who reached the latter stages of the Copa America with Uruguay and Colombia respectively.

Ivan Toney also returned to training at Brentford and the striker, whose future at the club remains uncertain this summer, was greeted with a standing ovation from the Bees coaching staff and his team-mates.

All six returning English players will now prepare more intensively for the new season. The Gunners will play friendlies against Bayer Leverkusen and Lyon at the Emirates Stadium in the pre-season.

Elsewhere, Liverpool take on Sevilla and Las Palmas at Anfield ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign with a home game against Wolves, while Liverpool travel to newly promoted club Ipswich. The two teams play each other on Saturday 10 August.
