Getafe manager Jose Bordalas has insisted that Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham was one of the reasons Mason Greenwood made the move to La Liga.
Greenwood was loaned to the Spanish side this summer, but has not played competitive football since December 2021, after being arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of a number of criminal offences, including attempted rape.
The former England international was suspended by Manchester United at the time and returned to football after the Crown Prosecution Service subsequently dropped charges due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and the coming to light of new material.
United believed Greenwood should leave the club to continue his career, and the 21-year-old forward headed to Spain, with the input of friend Bellingham believed to be a deciding factor.

Speaking to Radio Marca Bordalas, he insisted: ‘Greenwood is friends with Bellingham and he advised him to come to the Spanish league.
‘He’s a fantastic player. You have to be patient and calm, he hasn’t played for a year and a half.
‘We and his colleagues are helping him. He integrates in a sensational way and I hope he can help us.’
Getafe are currently fourteenth in the table after a disappointing start to the season, winning only one match.
Fans and the club itself welcomed Greenwood’s arrival with cheers, with supporters celebrating in the streets and Getafe’s social media team releasing many videos and images of the Englishman.
The forward could get his first start on Sunday when Getafe take on Osasuna.
Bordalas continued to comment on the transfer, saying: ‘It was a surprise, we never thought we could get such a player.
“But they contacted our sporting director (Ruben Reyes), we talked, we didn’t think it could happen, but both parties did their best (financially).”
