ENGLAND PLAYER RATINGS: Zak Crawley’s red-hot form continues and Jimmy Anderson put in a vintage display – but Jonny Bairstow has lost his spark, and which star batter had a match to forget?

  • England’s batting order struggled largely in the Visakhapatnam Test
  • Jasprit Bumrah and Yashasvi Jaiswal were both in superb form for the hosts
  • India squared the series with a huge 106-run win over England in Visakhapatnam

England fell to a 106-run defeat in Visakhapatnam and saw India level the five-Test series after an impressive performance from the hosts after the bitter defeat in Hyderabad.

Jasprit Bumrah broke the English batting order in the first innings, taking six for 45, while Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed a whopping 209 runs, while Shubman Gill added another ton in the second innings.

In-form England opener Zak Crawley was undoubtedly the most impressive of the tourists with the bat, with his 76 and 73 leading the way in both innings, while captain Ben Stokes was his only teammate to pass 40 in the entire match.

Bumrah wasn’t the only star with the ball, with England’s record wicket-taker Jimmy Anderson putting in a typically masterful performance with excellent figures of 35-5-76-5.

Here, Mail Sport’s Richard Gibson rates each of the England players after the second Test defeat in Visakhapatnam.

Jasprit Bumrah was at his devastating best in the first innings, tearing through the England line-up

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a stunning 209 off 290 balls with the opener at the crease for almost seven hours

Ben Stokes was the only England player, apart from Zak Crawley, to pass 40, but captained his side well

Zak Crawley 8.5. Had the lead in both innings and registered two of the match’s four fifties, prior to two dismissals: a rush of blood followed by a funny-looking DRS decision.

Ben Ducket 5. Two departures from the batpad just as he came ‘in’ would have been a disappointment for the left-hander from Nottinghamshire.

Ollie Pope 5. Brought back to earth after the pinnacle of his career in Hyderabad by Jasprit Bumrah’s unplayable yorker and a top-flight slip catch by Rohit Sharma.

Joe Root 4. A match to quickly forget. Outwitted by the magnificent Bumrah in the first innings, uncharacteristically frantic in the second, and working with limited ball due to worrying finger injury.

Jonny Bairstow 5. The Bazball fire starter has lost his spark in the face of some brilliant Bumrah, who made him responsible twice in the 1920s.

Ben Stokes 6.5. Captain creative in the field, first time in control of the bat, but a moment of sloppiness between the wickets is what a player with such high standards will reflect on.

Ben Foakes 7.5. The glovework was exemplary throughout – remember his snaffle underneath to account for Shreyas Iyer on the first day – and provided thoughts on what might have happened had Stokes not run away in pursuit.

Rehan Ahmed 7. Offers much better control than in Hyderabad and his wicket-taking threat against lower-order opponents in particular is becoming an increasingly useful weapon for England.

The indefatigable Jimmy Anderson returned to the England attack with his trademark control

Tom Hartley7. Under-par with the ball in the first innings, but threatened in the second by adding four victims to his collection of seven a week earlier – and his batting is a huge bonus.

Jimmy Anderson 8.5. The indefatigable Lancastrian started his 23rd calendar year as an international cricketer with a vintage display of seabowling, posting excellent figures of 35-5-76-5.

Shoaib Bashir 7. He belied his inexperience and modest years by establishing himself seamlessly at the top level, adding 40 percent to his career first wicket tally and displaying an impressive temperament.
