England No 1 Mary Earps opens up on learning French ahead of blockbuster move to Paris Saint-Germain, the Lionesses qualifying for next year’s Euros – and becoming a Swiftie!

Her last summers consisted of winning the European Championships, reaching the World Cup final and winning a number of Golden Gloves.

But this summer looks a little different for Mary Earps, as she reveals she has become a Swiftie, while desperately trying to learn French ahead of her upcoming move to Paris.

Earps, 31, now has 50 England caps to her name and has been a key part of the England women’s team in recent years, helping them achieve more success than ever before.

This summer Earps has been training with the national team, but she has also had some free time. She has been on holiday, watching Formula 1 at Silverstone and going crazy at Taylor Swift concerts.

In early July this year, Earps left for Paris Saint-Germain after playing for Manchester United for five years.

In 2023, she was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year and turned down a new contract at United, saying the club’s ambitions did not match hers.

Earps told the Mail she is now desperately trying to learn French and ‘really wants to be at PSG’.

“I’m moving to Paris in a few days,” she said. “There’s so much to do in such a short time.

‘But I’m really looking forward to the new journey and this new chapter.

‘I am most excited about moving to Paris for the football. I can’t wait to play for a top team and be in a position to compete and win trophies in the years to come.

‘That’s where I really want to be. Fighting at the top, that’s what I’m really looking forward to.

‘Overall, I’ve heard great things about the city off the pitch and I can’t wait to explore it.

‘One thing about me is that I love languages, so I’m doing everything I can to become fluent as soon as possible. But I think it will be a challenge.

‘I was there recently to sign for them and the city was going crazy.

‘The club director showed me everything and said: “This is the new stadium for the Olympic Games, and this and this.”’

Two summers ago, the Lionesses surprised with a home tournament, where they were crowned European champions for the first time in their history.

A year later they reached the final of the World Cup in Australia, but lost 1-0 to Spain.

Just last week, the Lionesses secured a place at the 2025 European Championships, which will be held in Switzerland next summer.

Earps said their next step is to regain the country’s support.

‘First of all it was great to qualify, we had to secure our place first, so it’s really a matter of step by step.

‘Of course we have had a lot of success in recent years. We reached the final of the World Cup and the biggest success was winning the European Championship.

‘So we will go into the next tournament as champions.

‘It is something very big and a title we can wear with pride, because we have earned it.

“But that is also in the past and now it is about the next tournament. To get that expectation, that belief and that support again, you have to earn it.

“We’re going to train hard. There’s still a year to go, so there’s a lot of work to be done. But I can’t wait.”

With sponsorship deals in place with underwear brand Victoria’s Secret, Puma and Chase Bank, the goalkeeper is a hot commodity.

Earps, who has won the FIFA Best Goalkeeper Award for the past two years, has also been active in the food partnership space, working with vitamin brand Nutriburst and most recently Warburtons.

Earps is now working with the British bakery to educate people about protein. She told the Mail that she is not concerned with how her body looks, but ‘how it performs’ and that she sees it as her responsibility to promote healthy eating.

“It’s a very fine line and language is very important when you’re talking about nutrition rather than diet,” she said. “We have to be very careful about how we talk about it.

‘Food and fuel in your body, it’s not just about how your body looks, it’s about how your body performs.

“You need your body to live and survive. I think that’s a very important message that we’re sending to young people.

Earps has stressed the importance of keeping her protein levels high during her training

‘Young women in particular, but all young people. Just all people.

‘Of course, the more active I am and the more I train, the more fuel and protein I need.

‘But in general I try to keep my protein levels high, especially as a goalkeeper, because our sport is much more strength and endurance based.

‘My sport involves shifting my body weight over and over again, so I make sure to pack a few of Warburton’s new protein bagels in my training bag.’
