England’s plans for the Six Nations have been dealt a blow after Elliot Daly was ruled out of the competition.

Saracens confirmed that the center will be sidelined for 12 weeks, having pulled a hamstring during Sunday night’s loss to Edinburgh.

Daly has been one of the Premiership’s center of form, but scans revealed damage that will keep him out until the end of the club’s season.

Bath’s powerful midfielder Ollie Lawrence has already been called up as a replacement, and Steve Borthwick faces turmoil in the squad ahead of next week’s opening test against Scotland.

Flanker Tom Curry and Luke Cowan-Dickie had already been ruled out of the Calcutta Cup, while hookers Jamie George and George McGuigan and slugger Courtney Lawes withdrew from this week’s camp.

It’s another blow for new manager Steve Borthwick who already has several players absent.

Speaking at this week’s Six Nations launch, Borthwick said: “The game against Scotland is one week on Saturday so there’s plenty of water to go under the bridge from time to time and before I name that team.

‘We have a good team and players who are desperate for the opportunity. Every time there is a setback, an opportunity opens up for someone else.’
